5-7 Defeat: Late Rally in Tampa Falls Short

Good morning, Red Sox Nation! Even in the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, it unfortunately wasn’t quite enough in the end. Yesterday afternoon’s game (First Pitch was at 1:10 PM EDT / 7:10 PM CEST) provided a real emotional rollercoaster for us watching on the screens back home. After falling significantly behind, our Boston Red Sox fought back impressively but ultimately had to accept a 5-7 defeat. A Tough Afternoon for Jake Bennett

Our Starting Pitcher (the pitcher who starts the game) Jake Bennett struggled to find a rhythm against an alert Rays offense. Following two scoreless innings, he stumbled in the third frame when a sacrifice fly (a deep fly ball trading an out for a run) by Taylor Walls put us in a 0-1 hole. In the fifth inning, the Rays noticeably picked up the pace: An RBI single (a hit to first base resulting in a run) by Yandy Díaz and an RBI double (a hit to second base scoring a run) by Austin Slater really hurt. Another sacrifice fly by Ryan Vilade made it 0-4. Bennett had to leave the game with four earned runs on his account and was tagged with the loss (L, 1-2). In the sixth inning, Tampa Bay even increased their lead to 0-5 against reliever Ryan Watson.

Durbin and Rafaela Spark Late Hope

Against Tampa’s starter Drew Rasmussen, who remained absolutely flawless over seven innings (0 ER, 2 H), there was simply nothing for our offense to grab for a long time. But in the eighth inning, things suddenly got wild against the Rays’ bullpen (relief pitchers)! Caleb Durbin broke the spell with a crushing solo homerun (a hit over the outfield wall scoring one run). After Isiah Kiner-Falefa drew a walk and Jarren Duran singled to get on base, it was Ceddanne Rafaela’s time to shine: He hammered the ball over the wall into left field for a massive 3-run homerun! Out of nowhere, a 0-5 deficit turned into a thrilling 4-5 game.

However, the joy was short-lived. In the bottom half of the eighth inning, our relief pitcher Justin Slaten surrendered a costly 2-run homerun to Cedric Mullins, extending the deficit back to 4-7. Although the outstanding Caleb Durbin managed to narrow the gap to 5-7 in the ninth inning with his second solo homerun of the day, the comeback ultimately remained unfinished.

Finally heading back home! The Red Sox return to Boston to host the Texas Rangers in the upcoming weekend series. The first game is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, June 12, 2026. The First Pitch at Fenway Park is set for 7:10 PM EDT. For us in Germany, this means putting in a night shift and keeping our fingers crossed starting at 1:10 AM CEST (early Saturday morning) that we can find our way back to the winning track at home!
