Heartbreak at Fenway Park: The Red Sox Comeback Arrives Just Too Late
Good morning, Red Sox Nation! Who of you managed to bravely stay awake last night? The first game of our home series against the mighty Atlanta Braves was a true rollercoaster ride for us German fans in front of our screens. The game started right on time at 12:48 AM (CEST) – for the fans at the stadium in Boston, it was a beautiful Tuesday evening at 6:48 PM (EDT). Unfortunately, the thriller ended with a painful 6-7 defeat. In this Boston Red Sox game report for fenway-fans.de, we summarize a game that could hardly be surpassed in terms of tension.
A Dream Start in the First Inning
The game could hardly have started any better. Against Spencer Strider, one of the best pitchers in the league, our boys immediately set off fireworks. Jarren Duran crushed the very first pitch in the bottom of the 1st for a solo homerun (a hit over the outfield wall for one run) into right field. And as if that wasn’t enough, Ceddanne Rafaela hit the very next ball over the wall – back-to-back homeruns! Our Boston Red Sox took an early 2-0 lead, and that late-night coffee on the couch in Germany suddenly tasted really good.
The Braves Strike Back Coldly
Unfortunately, our Starting Pitcher (the pitcher who starts the game) Ranger Suarez couldn’t defend this lead forever. In the fifth Inning (period of play), after allowing a walk, he surrendered a hard 2-run homerun to Atlanta’s Matt Olson, tying the game at 2-2.
In the sixth inning, the game broke open in a bitter way. Tyron Guerrero and Greg Weissert came out of the bullpen (the group of relief pitchers), but the Braves’ offense proved to be too strong. Thanks to a triple (a hit to third base) by Austin Riley and subsequent successful hits, the guests suddenly pulled away 5-2. A double play (a play that results in two outs) by Mickey Gasper brought us a run to make it 3-5, but a solo homerun by Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the seventh frame was the only real answer before the Braves pulled even further ahead 7-4 in the eighth inning via a Michael Harris II 2-run homerun.
A Ninth Inning for the History Books – Almost!
In the ninth inning, nobody in Germany could stay in bed. Against Atlanta’s closer (the relief pitcher for the final inning) Raisel Iglesias, we launched an unbelievable comeback. After a single by Mickey Gasper and a strong double (a hit to second base) by Nick Sogard, nerves were on edge. Isiah Kiner-Falefa kept his cool and delivered a smashing 2-RBI single (a hit that directly scores two runs). Suddenly, the score was a nail-biting 6-7!
Jarren Duran followed up with another single – the potential winning runs were on first and second base. But then Ceddanne Rafaela grounded into an unfortunate force out (a mandatory out at a base), and Wilyer Abreu ended the game with a groundout (a flat hit resulting in an out at first base). Sadly, the sensation did not materialize.
Statistical Overview
- Isiah Kiner-Falefa: 2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI (Runs Batted In), Run. An absolutely brilliant performance!
- Jarren Duran: 2-for-5, HR, Run, RBI.
- Ceddanne Rafaela: 1-for-5, HR, Run, RBI.
- Ranger Suarez: 5.0 IP (Innings Pitched), 3 ER (Earned Runs), Loss (2-3).
With this bitter loss, we now stand at 22-31 and unfortunately remain in fifth place in the American League East.
Outlook: Game 2 Against the Braves
There is no time to lick our wounds! In the upcoming night from Wednesday to Thursday, the second game against the Atlanta Braves is already on the schedule. The First Pitch is set for 6:45 PM EDT (Wednesday). For us in Germany, that means crossing our fingers starting at 12:45 AM CEST. Let’s get our revenge!
