A Lively See-Saw Affair at Fenway Park

The game started unfavorably when Minnesota took the lead in the first inning via Kody Clemens. But our boys showed character. In the second frame, Masataka Yoshida crushed the ball with a beautiful sound for a solo homerun (a hit over the outfield wall for one run), tying the game at 1-1.

After the Twins pushed ahead 3-1 in the third inning, our offense exploded in the fourth. Wilyer Abreu started with a double (a hit to second base), before Willson Contreras tied it at 3-3 with a massive 2-run homerun. Shortly after, Marcelo Mayer drove Masataka Yoshida home with a sharp single (a hit to first base) for a highly celebrated 4-3 lead.

The Costly Collapse in the Sixth Frame

Starting Pitcher Sonny Gray left the game after 4.0 innings with three runs allowed. Disaster struck in the sixth inning. Tyron Guerrero got into trouble, and the newly inserted Garrett Whitlock experienced a tough outing: Austin Martin and Brooks Lee dismantled us with back-to-back hits, turning the game in favor of the Twins at 6-4. Guerrero was ultimately tagged with the loss (L, 0-1).

Absolute Drama in the Ninth Inning

What unfolded in the ninth inning kept no one on their couch in Germany. Nick Sogard opened the final comeback attempt with a spectacular triple (a hit to third base). Following a walk by Carlos Narváez and a bitter strikeout by Marcelo Mayer, Isiah Kiner-Falefa delivered a clutch double. Sogard scored to make it 5-6, but pinch-runner Connor Wong was thrown out at home plate in a razor-thin millimeter decision. The subsequent video review (challenge) upheld the out call – an absolute shock.

Following a pitcher’s balk (an illegal motion by the pitcher) and a hit by pitch to Jarren Duran, runners were at the corners. However, Ceddanne Rafaela flew out harmlessly to the outfield to end the game. It was over.

Statistical Overview

  • Willson Contreras: 2-for-4, HR, Run, 2 RBI (Runs Batted In).
  • Masataka Yoshida: 2-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 Runs, RBI. A stellar day at the plate.
  • Wilyer Abreu: 2-for-4, two 2B (Doubles), Run.
  • Team RISP: 3-for-11. We lacked the final punch when it mattered most.

With this tough defeat, our overall record drops to 22-30, and we slide into last place in the brutal American League East.

Go Sox!
