The Nightmare in the Sixth Inning: A Grand Slam Breaks the Red Sox’s Neck
Good morning, Red Sox Nation. We all envisioned this completely differently. Following the fantastic 8-0 shutout the day before, euphoria was high when the final game of the series against the Atlanta Braves kicked off last night at 10:11 PM our time (CEST). The timing was perfect for a relaxed evening of baseball, but what we witnessed at Fenway Park turned into an absolute nightmare. Our Boston Red Sox went down without a fight, losing 2-10. In this Boston Red Sox game report for fenway-fans.de, we unfortunately have to break down how the game slipped entirely out of our hands.
Sale Keeps Us in Check Early
Right from the start, our offense struggled immensely against Chris Sale, who delivered a strong outing for Atlanta. By the fourth Inning (period of play), we were trailing 0-2 following RBI singles (hits to first base that score a run) from Jorge Mateo and Dominic Smith.
But then, our team briefly showed some resilience: A strong RBI double (a hit to second base resulting in a run) by Caleb Durbin brought Isiah Kiner-Falefa home. Immediately after, Jarren Duran followed up with a single, driving in the frantically celebrated 2-2 tying run. At that moment, everything felt right again in Fenway Park.
The Nightmare Inning for the Bullpen
The disaster began unfolding in the sixth inning – an inning that will likely upset Red Sox fans for a while. Our bullpen (the group of relief pitchers) experienced a complete meltdown. Danny Coulombe came in to replace the solid starter Payton Tolle (4.2 IP, 2 ER) and completely lost control. Without recording a single out, he loaded the bases by surrendering a single and two terrible walks (free passes via four bad pitches).
He was immediately yanked and replaced by Greg Weissert. Weissert, however, started his outing with another fatal walk to Mike Yastrzemski, handing the Braves a 3-2 lead without a swing. What happened next was the final, devastating blow: Ronald Acuña Jr. stepped up to the plate and demolished a pitch into the Boston night sky for a monstrous Grand Slam (a homerun with the bases loaded). Within minutes, the score was 2-7 – the game was over.
The Braves Show No Mercy
Atlanta smelled blood and showed no mercy. In the seventh inning, Michael Harris II piled on with a solo homerun. In the ninth frame, Ozzie Albies launched a massive 2-run homerun against Ryan Watson to set the painful 2-10 final score. Our offense was completely shut down after the fourth inning and simply had no answer for the visitors’ stellar pitching.
Statistical Overview
- Danny Coulombe: 0.0 IP, 3 ER, 2 Walks, Loss (0-2). A disastrous, short-lived appearance.
- Greg Weissert: 1.0 IP, 2 ER, HR. Had to clean up Coulombe’s mess but failed against Acuña Jr.
- Caleb Durbin: 2-for-4, 2B, Run, RBI. One of the few bright spots at the plate.
- Isiah Kiner-Falefa: 2-for-2, 2 Walks, Run. Safely reached base in every plate appearance.
With this heavy beating, our overall record worsens to 23-32. We remain trapped at the bottom of the American League East standings. Inconsistency is currently our biggest enemy.
Outlook: Off to Cleveland
Now it’s time to pack up and move on! The team travels straight to an away series against the strong Cleveland Guardians. The first game starts today, Friday, May 29, 2026, at 7:10 PM Eastern Time (EDT). For us here in Germany, that means the First Pitch is at 1:10 AM (CEST) on Saturday morning. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the boys can quickly clear this debacle from their minds!
