Dream Start and an Early 4-0 Lead

The game started absolutely fantastic for our offense. In the first Inning (period of play), our bats completely overwhelmed opposing pitcher Connor Prielipp. Wilyer Abreu opened up the scoring with an RBI double (a hit to second base that results in a run).

Shortly after, Willson Contreras hammered the ball deep for a strong 2-run triple (a hit to third base that scores two runs). A single (a hit to first base) by Andruw Monasterio and a sacrifice fly (a deep fly ball that trades an out for a run scored) by Marcelo Mayer gave us a comfortable 4-0 lead. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived.

Red Sox Pitching Wobbles Early

Our Starting Pitcher (the pitcher who starts the game) Payton Tolle never quite found his rhythm. In the very second inning, the Twins struck back mercilessly. Poor fielding (defensive play) and aggressive hitting by Minnesota quickly brought the guests within one run (4-3).

Our offense managed to add to the score in the fourth inning. A throwing error on a bunt (an intentionally short-hit ball) by Caleb Durbin and a smart groundout (a ball hit on the ground) by Jarren Duran extended our lead to 6-3.

The Collapse in the Seventh Inning

The deciding shift in favor of the Twins finally came in the seventh inning. Our relief pitcher Justin Slaten had a dreadful night. First, he surrendered a massive 2-run homerun (a hit over the outfield wall scoring two runs) to Byron Buxton.

Just moments later, Austin Martin also launched a homerun into the stands. Suddenly, we were trailing 6-7. In the ninth inning, our bullpen (the group of relief pitchers) gave up Minnesota’s eighth run via a frustrating walk (a free pass to first base after four bad pitches) with the bases loaded. Our offense was unfortunately unable to counter in the final frame.

Statistical Overview

  • Willson Contreras: 1-for-4, 3B (Triple), Run, 2 RBI (Runs Batted In). A strong start, but unlucky afterwards.
  • Wilyer Abreu: 2-for-5, 2B (Double), Run, RBI.
  • Payton Tolle: 6.0 IP (Innings Pitched), 3 ER (Earned Runs), 9 K (Strikeouts). Plenty of strikeouts, but too much hard contact.
  • Justin Slaten: 0.2 IP, 4 ER, Loss (0-2). An inning to forget.

With this avoidable defeat, our overall record drops to 22-28. We remain in fourth place in the highly competitive American League East. We simply cannot afford to let games like this slip away in front of our home crowd.

Outlook: When do the Red Sox play next?

The First Pitch at Fenway Park is set for a very comfortable time: 4:10 PM EDT. For the German Red Sox Nation, this means we can watch the action live during prime time at 10:10 PM (CET)! Let’s even up the series!
