Hey Red Sox Nation! Exactly what we feared over the last week has officially become reality. After a lot of speculation and frustration surrounding his lingering groin issue, the verdict is in: Trevor Story is going under the knife.

According to a report from Heavy Sports, citing Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo and the team’s official announcement, Story underwent a successful sports hernia repair today, May 22nd. The procedure was performed by specialist Dr. William Meyers at The Vincera Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

For Boston, this is just another brutal blow in a 2026 season that has been completely derailed by injuries. Story apparently aggravated the groin issue back in late April before ultimately hitting the IL on May 16th. With the surgery now complete, the expected recovery timeline is roughly 6 to 10 weeks. That means we won’t see our starting shortstop back on the field until at least mid-to-late summer, right around the trade deadline.

Even though Story’s offensive production this year had been incredibly disappointing, losing a marquee player for months creates a massive void in the middle of our infield.
