Rained Out in the Bronx: Red Sox-Yankees Saturday Night Matchup Postponed

The weekend set at Yankee Stadium gets shortened to two games as heavy rain forces a late-August split doubleheader split.

Hey Red Sox Nation! Just as we were gearing up for another fierce chapter of baseball’s greatest rivalry, Mother Nature stepped in to put things on pause. Saturday night’s highly anticipated matchup between our Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees was officially postponed due to a forecast of sustained inclement weather. According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, waiting out the storm system would have likely pushed the first pitch back to around 10:30 p.m. ET, making the postponement the right call for everyone involved.

The game has been rescheduled for later in the summer. It will now be made up at 1:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 29th, serving as the opening game of a day-night, split-admission doubleheader in the Bronx. Fans holding paid tickets for Saturday’s rained-out contest can use them directly for Game 1 of the August twin bill.

The rainout also ruined a highly anticipated broadcast novelty for FOX. Rivalry icons Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and our very own David “Big Papi” Ortiz were scheduled to live-analyze the game from the stadium alongside play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt. “We had a good one for you,” a disappointed A-Rod remarked as the broadcast crew exited the stadium.

Pitching Rotation Adjustments

With Saturday washed out, interim manager Chad Tracy and the Yankees have adjusted their pitching plans for the remainder of the weekend:

  • Left-handed starter Ranger Suárez, Boston’s scheduled Saturday pitcher, will now take the mound for Sunday’s 1:35 p.m. ET series finale.
  • The Yankees will stick with their regularly scheduled ace, righty fireballer Cam Schlittler.
  • Exceptional rookie southpaw Connelly Early, who was originally scheduled for Sunday, will skip the Yankees entirely. He is now slated to start Monday night when the Red Sox head to Tropicana Field to open a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
  • New York’s slated Saturday starter, Will Warren, will now open the Yankees’ upcoming road series in Cleveland on Monday.

Following Friday night’s stellar 5-3 opening victory—fueled by Willson Contreras’ massive two-run blast and a strong outing by Sonny Gray—the Red Sox are in a prime position to secure a massive series win in enemy territory on Sunday afternoon.

What are your thoughts on the rainout? Does this unexpected rest benefit our roster, or would you have preferred to keep the momentum rolling from Friday night’s big win? Let me know in the comments below! Go Sox!
