Sonny Gray Dominates, Contreras Hammers: A Perfect Start to the Most Important Series of the Year
Good morning, Red Sox Nation! Were you starting to worry after yesterday’s debacle against Baltimore? That was completely unfounded! The trip to the Bronx immediately reignited the fire within our team. Right on time at 1:09 AM German time (CEST) last night, arguably the biggest classic in baseball began, and our Boston Red Sox showed from the very start that they intended to leave Yankee Stadium as the victors. With a well-deserved 5-3 victory, the start of this prestigious series against the second-placed team in the American League East was successfully mastered. In this Boston Red Sox game report for fenway-fans.de, we celebrate a true rivalry win.
Feeling It Out Early and a Strong Response
The game started with a slight shock for all fans watching on their screens in Germany. In the very first Inning (period of play), our Starting Pitcher (the pitcher who starts the game) Sonny Gray gave up a crushing homerun to Ben Rice. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead.
But our boys didn’t let that rattle them and patiently struck back in the third inning. After Jarren Duran and Connor Wong worked their way onto the bases, Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras provided two extremely important runs with clever groundouts (flat hits resulting in an out at first base but allowing runners to advance) and soft singles. We had turned the game around to 2-1!
Homeruns Bring the Decision
In the fourth inning, Andruw Monasterio delivered the first major emotional outburst on our side. He hammered the ball into the stands for a brilliant solo homerun (a hit over the outfield wall scoring one run). Even though the Yankees were able to narrow the gap to 3-2 shortly after through Spencer Jones, the momentum was now clearly on our side.
However, Willson Contreras saved the absolute highlight of the game for the fifth inning. Wilyer Abreu positioned himself with a single (a hit to first base), before Contreras stepped up to the plate and uncompromisingly launched the ball deep into left field for a 2-run homerun. With this absolute rocket, we extended the lead to 5-2.
Although Trent Grisham managed another solo homerun for New York in the same inning to make it 5-3, that would remain the final run of the game.
The Bullpen Closes the Door
Sonny Gray delivered a fantastic performance, pitching into the seventh inning (6.1 IP) and highly deservedly securing his seventh win of the season (W, 7-1). After that, our bullpen (the relief pitchers) took complete control. Danny Coulombe and Justin Slaten allowed absolutely zero runs.
Things got briefly dramatic again in the ninth inning when Closer (the pitcher for the final inning) Aroldis Chapman gave up two walks (free passes). However, relying on all his experience, he secured the decisive final out against Trent Grisham, saving the victory (S, 13).
Statistical Overview
- Sonny Gray: 6.1 IP (Innings Pitched), 3 ER (Earned Runs), 8 H, 2 K (Strikeouts). A veteran and extremely valuable performance.
- Willson Contreras: 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI (Runs Batted In). The undisputed player of the game.
- Andruw Monasterio: 1-for-3, HR, Run, RBI. Landed the first crucial blow.
- Jarren Duran: 1-for-4, Run, SB (Stolen Base). A constant threat on the basepaths.
With this emotional win, we improve our record to 27-35. While we remain in fifth place, wins against the Yankees simply taste the best and provide a massive confidence boost.
Outlook: Part 2 of the Classic Tonight!

Get comfortable, because tonight starting at 1:35 AM CEST (early Sunday morning), we will be treated to top-tier baseball once again. Let’s win the series!
