The Afternoon Nightmare: A Single Inning Decides the Game Early On
Good evening, Red Sox Nation! Well, that didn’t go as planned. After cheering for a sensational five-run inning just yesterday, we got a taste of our own medicine today – and in the most bitter way possible. The decisive third game of the series against the Baltimore Orioles started at the perfect prime-time slot for us in Germany at 7:36 PM (CEST), but the joy was short-lived. With a crushing 2-8 defeat, our Boston Red Sox delivered a heavy disappointment. In this Boston Red Sox game report for fenway-fans.de, we summarize a game that was essentially over after 15 minutes.
Brayan Bello Experiences an Inning to Forget
The story of this game is quickly told, as it took place almost entirely in the first Inning (period of play). Our Starting Pitcher (the pitcher who starts the game) Brayan Bello stepped onto the mound and experienced a complete loss of control. What began as a normal inning spiraled into an absolute disaster.
Following a hit by pitch and a quick RBI single (a hit to first base resulting in a run) from Adley Rutschman, Bello briefly seemed to recover. But then the floodgates opened:
- A walk loaded the bases.
- Leody Taveras delivered a single to make it 2-0.
- After another walk, Coby Mayo stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases completely with a smashing 3-run double (a hit to second base scoring three runs) – 5-0!
- Taylor Ward added another RBI single shortly after to make it 6-0.
Bello barely survived the inning, but the game was essentially lost at this early stage. Bello continued to pitch until the fifth inning but ultimately allowed eight earned runs and was deservedly tagged with the loss (L, 2-6).
Offense Finds No Answer Against Rogers
Anyone hoping our bats could strike back after yesterday’s fireworks was left disappointed. The Red Sox couldn’t figure out Baltimore’s starter Trevor Rogers at all. The first sign of life came in the sixth inning when Willson Contreras finally put the first run on the board with an RBI single following base hits by Rafaela and Abreu, making it 1-8.
In the ninth frame, Contreras was able to celebrate a massive solo homerun (a hit over the outfield wall scoring one run) to set the 2-8 final score, but it was purely cosmetic. Otherwise, the offense remained pale, scraping together a meager total of seven hits.
Statistical Overview
- Brayan Bello: 5.0 IP (Innings Pitched), 8 ER (Earned Runs), 7 H, 4 K (Strikeouts). An afternoon to forget.
- Willson Contreras: 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI (Runs Batted In). The only bright spot in our lineup.
- Ceddanne Rafaela: 1-for-4, Run.
- Team LOB (Left On Base): 5. The few opportunities created were not capitalized on.
With this heavy beating, we miss out on the series win and fall back to a record of 26-35. We remain dead last in the competitive American League East.
Outlook: Off to the Bronx!
Luckily, there’s not much time to dwell on this. The team travels straight to New York for a highly anticipated away series against our eternal rivals, the New York Yankees. The first game kicks off tonight, Friday, June 5, 2026. The First Pitch at Yankee Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 PM EDT. For us German fans, that means another night shift: Tune in at 1:05 AM CEST (early Saturday morning). Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the boys can quickly get this debacle out of their heads and show a different face in this classic rivalry!
Go Sox!
