A Tough Night Battle: Early Homeruns Break the Red Sox’s Neck
Good morning, Red Sox Nation! You stock up on coffee in Berlin for the late-night shift in front of the TV, and then the start of the new series against the Baltimore Orioles unfortunately doesn’t go according to plan at all. Right on time at 12:47 AM (CEST), the First Pitch was thrown at Fenway Park (6:47 PM local time), but the night ended with a frustrating 2-4 defeat on the scoreboard. In this Boston Red Sox game report for fenway-fans.de, we take a look at why we had to let our division rivals take the win this time.
Connelly Early Can’t Find His Rhythm
Our Starting Pitcher (the pitcher who starts the game) Connelly Early, who mesmerized us with a fantastic shutout just last week, unfortunately had an off-day. The Orioles’ offense didn’t waste any time: In the very second Inning (period of play), Coby Mayo crushed a solo homerun (a hit over the outfield wall scoring one run).
An inning later, veteran Pete Alonso followed up with a massive 2-run homerun. When Blaze Alexander also scored via a sacrifice fly (a deep fly ball trading an out for a run) in the fourth frame, we quickly found ourselves in a painful 0-4 hole. Early was tagged with the loss (L, 5-3) and had to leave the mound after 5.1 innings and four earned runs. Although our bullpen (the relief pitchers) featuring Greg Weissert and Tyler Samaniego did a flawless job keeping the board clean afterward, the damage was already done.
The Offense Fails to Ignite
Our bats could hardly figure out Baltimore’s starter Shane Baz. Baz dominated for 7.0 innings and often had our boys swinging at air. The first glimmer of hope came in the fourth inning when Wilyer Abreu put Boston’s first run on the board with a sacrifice fly.
A genuine push happened once more in the eighth inning: Caleb Durbin hit a hard double (a hit to second base), and Jarren Duran followed up with a spectacular triple (a hit to third base). Another sacrifice fly, this time by Marcelo Mayer, brought us within 2-4. However, the Orioles’ closers (the pitchers for the final innings), Andrew Kittredge and Richard Garcia, coldly shut the door afterward. A meager total of just five hits (successful strikes) was simply not enough to mount a comeback.
Statistical Overview
- Connelly Early: 5.1 IP (Innings Pitched), 4 ER (Earned Runs), 6 H, 6 K (Strikeouts).
- Jarren Duran: 1-for-4, 3B (Triple), Run.
- Caleb Durbin: 1-for-3, 2B (Double).
- Team LOB (Left On Base): 4. We barely put any runners on base to build real pressure.
With this home defeat, our record drops further to 25-34, leaving us stuck in last place in the American League East.
Outlook: Game 2 Against the Orioles
We won’t hang our heads! The chance for redemption comes right up tomorrow night. The second game of the series against the Baltimore Orioles starts at 7:10 PM EDT. For us German fans, this means another long night, as the First Pitch is scheduled for 1:10 AM CEST. Let’s hope for revenge!
