Following a tough bullpen collapse against Atlanta, interim manager Chad Tracy targets a new left-handed option to open Friday’s game.
Hey Red Sox Nation! After a painful bullpen unraveling on Thursday against the Braves—where a tight 2-2 tie transformed into a devastating 10-2 loss in a matter of minutes—the squad heads to Cleveland to face the Guardians sitting at 23-32 on the season. But right before Friday’s series opener, the front office announced a highly intriguing tactical decision regarding the usage of right-hander Brayan Bello.
According to a report from Heavy Sports, the Red Sox are sticking with the opener system for Bello, but with a fresh face leading the way. The statistical splits for Bello in 2026 are simply impossible to ignore. As a traditional starting pitcher, he has looked completely lost, posting a dreadful 9.68 ERA across seven outings. However, when coming out of the bullpen behind an opener to handle the bulk relief duties, he has been utterly dominant, giving up just two earned runs over three appearances for a microscopic 0.98 ERA. “You can’t ignore how Bello has pitched behind an opener,” interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged on Thursday.
The real twist comes with who is getting the ball first. Jovani Morán had served as Bello’s opener in all three previous instances. However, Morán has been highly effective in his traditional late-inning relief lane, and Boston doesn’t want to break a useful tool trying to fix another. Enter left-handed reliever Tyler Samaniego. Samaniego will officially get the start on Friday, giving Bello the runway once the initial traffic is cleared.
With ace Garrett Crochet rapidly approaching his return from the injured list, the clock is ticking for everyone in the rotation to lock down their spot. This makes Friday night a massive test for Bello’s long-term standing.
What do you guys think about utilizing Tyler Samaniego as the new opener? Can Bello keep his incredible bulk-relief numbers rolling against Cleveland? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! Go Sox!
