The Miracle of Worcester: Tayron Guerrero Returns to the Big Leagues!

After a seven-year absence, the Red Sox reward the 35-year-old flamethrower for his sheer dominance in Triple-A. However, a controversial corresponding roster move is sparking debate.

If you’ve been following our Worcester Red Sox (WooSox) recently, you definitely noticed the 6-foot-8 giant on the mound consistently baffling hitters with his upper-90s fastball. Well, the hard work has paid off: According to a report by MLB Trade Rumors, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and the Boston Red Sox have officially selected the contract of Tayron Guerrero!

What an unbelievable comeback story! The 35-year-old Colombian hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2019. After stints in Japan and various minor league deals, he signed with Boston this winter and has simply dominated Triple-A. Over 19 2/3 innings, he allowed just two earned runs, boasting a ridiculous 0.92 ERA. Backed by 22 strikeouts and a massive ground ball rate, he has absolutely earned this ticket to Fenway Park.

However, this roster move comes with some tough decisions. To clear a spot on the active 26-man roster, Zack Kelly was optioned back to Triple-A. It’s a somewhat curious move considering Kelly has been extremely solid over his last 12 appearances, and trade rumors are already starting to swirl around him. Additionally, starter Kutter Crawford had to be transferred to the 60-day injured list to open up the necessary 40-man roster spot for Guerrero.
