Boston Red Sox Game Report: Duran saves the evening in Kansas City
Good morning, Red Sox Nation. What a nerve-wracking finale of our away series in the Kauffman Stadium! On Wednesday evening our Boston Red Sox secured a narrow, but immensely important 4:3 victory against the Royals. Through this success the series victory also goes to our team.
The First Pitch (the first throw of the game) occurred at 18:41 American time. For us fans in Germany that meant the starting shot to a late night shift at 01:41. In this Boston Red Sox game report we look back on the game-deciding scenes.
Early deficit and quick equalizer
Our Starting Pitcher (the thrower, who begins the game) Connelly Early had slight problems at the beginning. Already in the first Inning (game segment) he had to accept a solo homerun (a direct hit over the outer wall for one point) from Salvador Perez.
Our boys did not let themselves be shocked by that however. In the second Inning Willson Contreras hammered the ball for a strong Triple (a hit to the third base) into the field. Shortly thereafter Nick Sogard brought him home with a Single (a hit to the first base) for the 1:1 equalizer. A clever Groundout (a flat hit to the ground) from Carlos Narváez brought us a little later even into a 2:1 lead. The Royals countered however in the fifth Inning with a 2-run homerun through Elias Díaz to the 2:3.
The homerun for the decision by Jarren Duran
It lasted until the seventh Inning, before our offense could set the deciding pinprick. After a beautiful hit from Carlos Narváez, Jarren Duran stepped to the batting plate. With a full swing he transported the ball deep into the left field for a massive 2-run homerun. This hit turned the game finally to 4:3.
The Bullpen secures the away victory
Connelly Early left the game in the seventh Inning with a good record. He threw 6.1 Innings, allowed three points and booked five Strikeouts (when the thrower lets the batsman miss three times). With that he secured himself his fourth season victory (W, 4-2).
After that our Bullpen (the group of substitute throwers) took over. Greg Weissert and Jovani Morán held the offense of the Royals in check. In the ninth Inning finally came our Closer (the last thrower, who should secure a narrow lead) Aroldis Chapman onto the Mound (the thrower hill). Chapman kept the calm despite a runner on the base and celebrated his twelfth Save (the successful rescue of a victory).
Statistical Overview
- Jarren Duran: 2-for-5, HR, 3B (Triple), 2 RBI (Run Batted In – points through own hit). The match winner of the evening.
- Willson Contreras: 3-for-4, 3B, Run. A bear-strong performance at the plate.
- Connelly Early: 6.1 IP (played Innings), 3 ER (self caused points), 5 K (Strikeouts).
- Aroldis Chapman: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, Save (12).
With this important success we improve our total record to 22-27 and solidify the fourth place in the rock-hard American League East.
Outlook: When do the Red Sox play next?
Today the team has a deserved rest day, in order to recharge the batteries for the upcoming home series. On Friday, the 22nd of May 2026, it goes on before home scenery in the Fenway Park. As guests are the Minnesota Twins. The First Pitch in Boston falls at 19:10 local time (EDT). For the German Red Sox Nation the live transmission thus starts at 01:10 at night (CET).
