June 24, 2026 – Boston Red Sox Game Report

6-8 Defeat: A Defensive Nightmare and Bullpen Collapse Cost the Series in Colorado

Good morning, Red Sox Nation! Anyone who was looking forward to a relaxed “Rubber Game” (the decisive third game of a series) at prime time yesterday evening (9:11 PM CEST) needed strong nerves in the end – and was unfortunately bitterly disappointed. Following Tuesday’s grandiose victory, our Boston Red Sox had their sights firmly set on winning the series in the Rocky Mountains. For a long time, everything looked like a commanding away victory, but a dramatic collapse in the final third of the game sealed a highly frustrating 6-8 defeat. In this Boston Red Sox game report for fenway-fans.de, we process how this game managed to slip away from us.

More Information

Suarez Dominates, The Offense Delivers

The first six Innings (periods of play) belonged almost exclusively to our boys. Starting Pitcher (the pitcher who starts the game) Ranger Suarez continued his strong form. He pitched 6.0 innings, recorded an outstanding nine strikeouts (three missed swings by the batter), and largely kept the Rockies’ offense in check (3 earned runs).

Our own lineup also set off a true firework display at Coors Field:

  • Right in the first inning, the outstanding Ceddanne Rafaela opened with a triple (a hit to third base) and was brought home by Willson Contreras via an RBI double (a hit to second base scoring a run) to make it 1-0.
  • In the second frame, Connor Wong launched the ball into the stands for a massive 2-run homerun (a hit over the outfield wall scoring two runs) (3-0).
  • After Colorado managed to close the gap, Andruw Monasterio restored the lead with a cracking solo homerun in the fourth inning. Another RBI single from Rafaela perfected the 5-2 lead.
  • In the fifth inning, Anthony Seigler even increased the lead to a supposedly comfortable 6-3 with an RBI double.

Everything was going according to plan. Suarez left the mound after the sixth inning with the lead behind him. But then, disaster struck.

The Cursed Seventh Inning: Mayer’s Error Opens the Floodgates

In the seventh inning, Tyron Guerrero took over from the bullpen (relief pitchers). With two outs, the inning seemed almost over when Tyler Freeman got on base via a hit-by-pitch. What followed broke the game: Hunter Goodman hit an actually harmless ball to our shortstop Marcelo Mayer, but he committed a momentous fielding error.

Instead of ending the inning, the Rockies stayed alive – and they punished this mistake mercilessly. Cole Carrigg and Jake McCarthy promptly hit two RBI singles. Our manager reacted and brought in Danny Coulombe, but he couldn’t extinguish the fire either. Pinch-hitter Troy Johnston hit another single, sensationally tying the game at 6-6. All three runs in this inning were “unearned” (not the pitcher’s fault), but the damage was immense.

Slaten Stumbles, The Lineup Goes Silent

The shock ran deep, and the game completely slipped away from us in the eighth inning. Justin Slaten (now 0-4) took the mound and found no grip at all. A single by Mickey Moniak, another single by Willi Castro, and a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt (a bunt to advance the runners) by Tyler Freeman gave Colorado a 7-6 lead. A painful RBI double by Cole Carrigg finally sealed the 6-8.

Our offense, which had operated so fluidly in the early innings, was completely shut down in the decisive moments. Against Colorado’s relief pitchers Antonio Senzatela and Jimmy Herget, there were no compelling actions in the last three innings. The game ended with three quick outs in the ninth inning.

Statistical Overview & Season Context

A game you must win when you perform like that for six innings. This defeat really hurts and lets our record slide to a bitter 32-46.

  • Ceddanne Rafaela: 3-for-5, 3B, 2B, 1 Run, 1 RBI. A fantastic game at the plate; he was the engine of the offense.
  • Ranger Suarez: 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 9 K. An extremely strong start that was ruined by the bullpen and defense.
  • Justin Slaten: 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H. Took the loss in a very bitter eighth inning.
  • Marcelo Mayer: His error in the seventh inning was the unfortunate turning point of the entire game.

Outlook: Returning Home – The Arch-Rival Awaits!

This blown save will definitely linger with the boys on the flight home. But in baseball, there is no time for long mourning. The team must channel this frustration into energy because an absolute blockbuster awaits us tonight. We are back at our home Fenway Park hosting our biggest arch-rivals: The New York Yankees! The First Pitch for tonight’s game on Thursday, June 25, 2026, is scheduled for 7:10 PM EDT. For us fans in Germany, that means tuning in for the next night shift starting at 1:10 AM CEST (early Friday morning). Let’s pack the house and chase the Yankees out of the stadium!

Go Sox!
